Board Member Openings: Membership & Merchandising

As we transition to the first season of NYCFC competing in MLS, some members of our Board of Directors are moving on, and that gives you two exciting new opportunities to get involved!

Membership and Merchandising are two key areas for the Third Rail, and we are looking for members to apply for these open positions.

To select our new Directors, we are going to follow this process:

  1. Submit a 500 word application on why you are suitable for this position. The statement may include anything you think members would find relevant in making their decision, but ideally, the statement will include the unique qualifications would you bring to this position, your vision for this position, your vision for the Third Rail and what you think we should do to improve the Third Rail for our members.
  2. Applications will be due at 11:00pm EST on Sunday, February 22nd.
  3. By Tuesday, February 24th, the Board will shortlist a number of applicants, based solely on their ability to meet the required qualifications, and post their personal statements on the site.
  4. Members will then have the opportunity to vote on who they want as the new Board Member based upon their statements.  Voting will close on Friday, February 27th at 5:00pm EST.
  5. The Board will then connect with the highest-rated applicants (1 for Membership, 1 for Merchandise), and introduce them to the members by Sunday, March 1st. 

These are the two open positions: 

Director of Membership

Roles and responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining the master member list, adding new members as needed;
  • Coordinating with Upper90 for membership packages and directory updates;
  • Updating contact information for members;
  • Communicating membership questions to appropriate board members;
  • Signing up new members at events/welcoming new members;
  • Answering any questions regarding membership;
  • Packing and labeling membership cards; and
  • Finding ways to get members involved in subcommittees 

Preferred skills:

  • Professional communicator;
  • Customer service/management experience preferred;
  • Database administration a plus;
  • Working knowledge of excel or Google sheets; and
  • Mailchimp proficiency preferred

Director of Merchandise

Roles and responsibilities include:

  • creating and administering our merchandise line;
  • setting and meeting budgets;
  • working with a team of artists, managing deadlines and providing feedback;
  • communicating between the design team and Board of Directors;
  • placing orders and coordinating with our external vendors and retail partners;
  • tracking sales and reporting to the Board

Preferred skills:

  • a background in design, art or sales preferred;
  • must be able to work independently;
  • communicating effectively with a diverse group of volunteer artists;
  • ability to meet deadlines under pressure; and 
  • recruiting new artists and volunteers. 

All Board members are volunteers, who receive no compensation for their service.
